Actually By election can determine the outcome of A general election.
As example before the a election,if a certain party or coalition wins with a big majority or boost huge popularity then the General nationwide election can be easily determined the outcome which is now in the current senario i think BN will lose or win by a even slighter margin then now which isn't 2/3 of the seats in parliment.
The new prime minister DS Najib said Barisan Nasional might not contest the Penanti state by-election if it obtains the consensus of all component parties.It's because they already know it's a fallen cause and just waste of money.To further elaborate issues he will discuss with other BN component members on the best possible way of tackling this issue as in hope it will not get politicized but i am sure it will and this will only just exploits the government weaknesses

"I will raise the matter at the next Umno Supreme Council meeting. If I don't have the time, I will bring it up to the Political Bureau, and discuss with the Barisan component party presidents," he said.

Najib said he did not rule out the possibility of Barisan not contesting as the latest by-election in Penang was clearly a "political ploy" by the Opposition.

"No, we are not afraid of losing to them but it is a sheer waste of public funds.

"Whatever decision we make, we will take into consideration whether it benefits the people," he told reporters at a press conference at his residence near here on Saturday.

The former PM does not seem to be on the same page as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who floated the idea yesterday of not contesting the polls.

“If it was in an Umno area, I am sure that we will contest. However, since it is in an Opposition area, we do not want to contest.

“But if we wait to contest only in Umno areas, then there would not be any Umno’s areas and we would not have to contest anywhere,” he said in Raub, Pahang today.

Najib had argued that contesting elections he claimed were unnecessary was a waste of public funds.

His idea appeared to have gained traction with many BN leaders voicing their support and accusing Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of using elections for political purposes.

Since last year’s landmark general elections, BN has lost four out of five by-elections held so far to Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

The latest defeats, in Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau, were particularly galling for BN as it came soon after Najib took over as PM from Tun Abdullah Badawi, the man who has been singled out for blame for the coalition’s poor performances.

Today, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof was quoted by Sin Chew Daily as saying he was seeking a meeting with both BN and PR to urge them not to contest the polls.

The EC chairman echoed Najib’s call, but he did not cite any legal or constitutional provisions which would allow the vote to be called off.

but i think that PR will win this seat as this is the backbone of Anwar's parliment so BN will not contest

Dr Mahathir’s latest remarks will be the latest test for Najib’s fledgling leadership of BN as the PM will want to assert his leadership.

The Penanti state seat has fallen vacant due to the resignation of Fairus Khairuddin, who also resigned recently as the state’s deputy chief minister amid graft allegations.

Penanti is a state seat which falls within Anwar’s Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency.

Yesterday, Anwar also welcomed Najib’s suggestion, saying he was happy if BN did not contest the vote.

Dr Mahathir said that when he was prime minister, Umno never withdrew from any election, including in Kelantan, a PAS stronghold.

“Winning or losing is a separate matter but if we do not contest then the other party has already won,” he said.

“History has proven that Umno can face giant powers, including the British in our struggle for independence.

“The fighting spirit of those days should be a lesson to present and future generations.”

well a long wait here..A long time of me not posting due to examinations and other commitments.. but then who cares?The main fact i am celebrating Hari Raya Aidil Fitri in my country of malaysia.
Now i can say Malaysia is in its worst state of affairs to be honest from the resignation of Zaid Ibrahim the minister of law enforcement to the rebel party of SAPP broken out of BN and causing mass havoc within and without it's party..
well i can say the Anwar Ibrahim deadline of 16 Sept hasn't failed as it says of the obstacles being put by the BN government..and the uncertain UMNO elections date deadline...hehe some party that state of affairs is in to..
and the MCA elections has it's turnings and thrills especially with some sabotage done on Chua Soi LEk...the main culprit in the sex video causing his resignation from the government a not so long time ago..It is said some pictures resembling him is being spreaded to delegates addresses..Well what on earth did they get the adresses from???Some party sabotage i will tell ya...
anyway this raya inflation in malaysia has risen..state monetry affairs has just gotten worst with some Investors pulling out due to the political instability and nonsense policies of the government that isn't so favourable and just cannot compete with other nations aka thailand,vietnam or even Indonesia!!
we pray that the new government will give us a new hope and light without discriminating malays like me.if it happens you don't want to know the consequences it will have on the PR government with the army consists of 90 percent malays maybe?revolting...

Hari ini, Mei 19, 2008 saya mengumumkan keputusan saya untuk keluar daripada UMNO. Isteri saya turut bersama.Keputusan ini dibuat kerana UMNO yang ada sekarang bukan lagi UMNO yang ditubuh 62 tahun dahulu yang berjuang untuk bangsa Melayu, Agama Islam dan Negara Malaysia (Malaya); UMNO yang menggagalkan Malayan Union, memperjuangkan kemerdekaan Malaya dan Malaysia dan membangunkan Malaysia sehingga menjadi Negara yang termaju di antara Negara membangun di dunia.
UMNO yang ada sekarang hanya wujud untuk menyokong Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, keluarganya dan tindakan serta dasar yang tidak secocok dengan kepentingan bangsa, agama dan negara.Kepimpinan Dato Seri Abdullah jelas membawa kekalahan dan bencana kepada Barisan Nasional, UMNO, MCA, MIC, Gerakan dan PPP. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the appointment of anyone except Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh as Terengganu Mentri Besar is unconstitutional.Most of the state BN assemblymen support Idris Jusoh and remains unchanged over their stand despite the appointment of Datuk Ahmad Said as the Menteri Besar by the palace authorities he told reporters after attending the 10th Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix yesterday. "Therefore, appointing anyone else is not right constitutionally" he quoted as saying.


Abdullah was commenting on the Mentri Besar saga in which Kijal assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said received his letter of appointment as the new Mentri Besar from Regency Advisory Council (MPPR) chief Tengku Sri Panglima Raja Tengku Baderulzaman at a closed-door ceremony at Istana Tetamu in Kuala Terengganu at 8.20am yesterday.


Idris was of all smiles as he came out of a meeting with Abdullah last night with 21 assemblymen exclude datuk Ahmad said.It is very good news, very positive. What is good for the people is very good for me,” he told reporters outside the Prime Minister’s official residence, Seri Perdana.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would make a statement on the matter.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, met outside Seri Perdana, said Abdullah and Najib had given their support for Idris to be the Mentri Besar.

He said it was the decision of the party that won the majority in the state assembly to select the Mentri Besar and the Ruler had to abide by it according to the Constitution.

“The palace has to accept Barisan Nasional's decision as it is in accordance with our constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democratic system,” he said.

He said Ahmad attended the state liaison committee meeting at Seri Perdana but left soon after.

Hari ini, saya yang selama ini menyokong UMNO dengan sepenuh jiwa raga telah mengambil keputusan bahawa saya tidak dapat lagi meneruskan sokongan saya kepada UMNO.

Sejak 1999, saya dan rakan-rakan telah berjuang dengan cara kami sendiri di alam maya ini dalam memastikan kekuatan UMNO. Tetapi hari ini, setelah barisan kabinet baru diumumkan oleh Perdana Menteri yang mana dirinya sendiri tidak diiktiraf oleh majority rakyat secara peribadi, saya tidak dapat lagi meneruskan sokongan terhadap parti keramat orang Melayu ini.


Saya menyokong UMNO selama ini bukan kerana namanya UMNO. Saya juga menyokong UMNO bukan kerana Tun Dr. Mahathir atau kerana ADUN kawasan saya. Saya juga terus menyokong UMNO pada tahun 2004 bukan kerana Abdullah Badawi. Dan lebih lagi, saya bukan menyokong UMNO kerana mendapat projek atau kontrak dari UMNO. Ini kerana saya bukan seorang kontraktor, bukan seorang peniaga dan bukannya merempat mengharap bantuan kerajaan dan UMNO untuk menyara keluarga. Saya mampu dan berkelayakan untuk bekerja dengan kebolehan dan bakat yang dikurniakan Allah kepada saya tanpa mengharap bantuan sesiapa. Saya telah bekerja di beberapa syarikat multinasional sebelum ini tanpa memerlukan orang dalam untuk memperkenalkan saya kepada sesiapa.

Sehingga kini, saya tidak pernah menerima atau mengharap apa-apa bantuan dari UMNO malah saya pernah mengeluarkan wang sendiri untuk menjayakan aktiviti-aktiviti Kelab Maya UMNO yang telah berhempas pulas mempertahankan UMNO dari serangan pembangkang di alam maya di era kegemilangan-kejatuhan Anwar Ibrahim. Semuanya saya lakukan demi kekuatan UMNO, orang Melayu dan kesejahteraan Malaysia.

Politik Melayu sebenarnya agak pelik dan lucu. Sesebuah parti politik Melayu disokong bukan semestinya kerana ideologinya atau rekod pemerintahannya. Ada yang menyokong satu-satu parti politik kerana ibu bapanya menyokong parti tersebut atau kerana semua rakan-rakannya menyokong parti tersebut.

Memang ada orang Melayu yang menyokong UMNO hanya kerana namanya UMNO.

Kerana mereka percaya UMNO itu adalah Parti yang memperjuangkan orang Melayu kerana itulah yang tertulis dalam sejarah dan itulah yang dilihat dilakukan oleh pejuang dan pemimpin UMNO sebelum ini.

Saya menyokong UMNO hanya kerana saya percaya arah tujunya tepat dan pemimpinnya berkebolehan dalam memastikan keselesaan hidup saya sekeluarga di bumi Malaysia. Kesejahteraan hidup adalah penting bagi membolehkan kita meningkatkan ekonomi, memperkasakan umat dan memastikan keselamatan terjamin.

Sebahagian dari masyarakat Melayu pula memilih untuk menyokong PAS. Ini kerana mereka percaya PAS itu adalah sinonim dengan agama Islam. Mereka percaya PAS itu memperjuangkan Islam walaupun ramai di antara penyokong kuatnya yang sanggup bergaduh dengan saya untuk menegakkan Islam melalui PAS adalah orang yang pengotor, kaki dangdut, gila perempuan, makan wang anak yatim dan bermacam-macam lagi yang mana saya sebagai Muslim yang jahil ini juga tidak sanggup untuk memikirkannya. Ada juga penganut PAS yang suka menyindir saya sebagai tidak cukup Islam tetapi di masa yang sama merupakan seorang pelanggan tetap bomoh Indonesia di kampung berdekatan. Mungkin mereka menyokong PAS hanya untuk menghalalkan cara hidup mereka, saya tidak tahu.

Saya tidak dapat menerima PAS sebagai Parti yang mampu membawa Malaysia dan Melayu ke hadapan kerana ideologinya yang tidak jelas. Pemimpin mereka sendiri masih ragu-ragu tentang Islam dan keliru samada cara hidup Taliban itu wajar atau tidak. Lebih dari itu, cakap-cakap tentang memperagakan Islam dan menunjuk-nunjuk Islam sehingga sanggup berjihad tanpa sebab hanya membawa negara ini jauh ke belakang menyamai zaman jahiliah. PAS juga sering tidak konsisten dalam meletakkan kedudukan wanita di dalam Parti, di dalam negara malah di dalam rumah juga. Ramai orang PAS yang saya kenal suka mengherdik dan menengking isteri di hadapan tetamu.

Malah ramai pemimpin PAS merupakan rakan bapa saya semasa di Universiti Al-Azhar dan saya lebih tahu betapa hipokritnya mereka apabila meletakkan pakaian (tudung) seolah-olah tuntutan tertinggi di dalam Islam sedangkan mereka tahu isteri mereka yang sama-sama belajar di Al-Azhar dan juga pensyarah wanita di Al-Azhar rata-ratanya tidak pun memakai tudung pada waktu itu. Kerana itu, PAS saya anggap sebagai Parti yang sekadar ingin menjadi hakim ke atas iman manusia lain yang mana merupakan hak mutlak Allah S.W.T. Walhal PAS hanyalah Parti yang diwujudkan oleh manusia yang inginkan kuasa tetapi tidak mampu mendapatnya melalui UMNO.

Melayu yang menyokong KeAdilan pula percaya Anwar Ibrahim telah teraniaya. Keadilan tidak punya ideologi atau perjuangan yang jelas kerana Parti ini wujud hanyalah untuk membebaskan Anwar dari segala tuduhan dan bukannya untuk rakyat Malaysia atau bangsa Melayu. Hari ini, setelah Anwar bebas, perjuangan Parti ini semakin kabur atau semakin jelas iaitu hanyalah untuk meletakkan Anwar Ibrahim sebagai Perdana Menteri serta membalas dendam terhadap musuhnya dan tidak ada sebab lain lagi. Pendek kata, perjuangan parti ini hanyalah satu perjuangan peribadi.

Oleh itu, hanya UMNOlah yang menjadi tunjang harapan Melayu dan tunggak kerjasama antara bangsa-bangsa lain di Malaysia melalui peranannya dalam Barisan Nasional. Kerana itulah saya telah menjadi penyokong kuat UMNO selama ini dan saya percaya jika runtuh UMNO, runtuhlah Barisan Nasional. Runtuh UMNO, runtuhlah Melayu dan runtuh Barisan Nasional, runtuhlah Malaysia.

Hari ini, tunjang itu telah bukan sahaja patah, tetapi hancur berkecai. Saya tersilap bila menyangkakan masih ada harapan untuk UMNO belajar dari kesilapan empat tahun yang diterjemahkan melalui Pilihanraya 2008, rupanya sangkaan saya meleset sama sekali. Dengan barisan cabinet dapur yang baru diumumkan tadi, saya dengan ini tidak lagi menaruh apa-apa harapan atau kepercayaan lagi terhadap UMNO.

Pilihanraya untuk memilih kerajaan diadakan bagi menterjemahkan demokrasi iaitu kerajaan pilihan rakyat. Tetapi kerajaan hari ini telah sekali lagi menidakkan suara rakyat dengan enggan mengakui bahawa keputusan itu merupakan suara hati rakyat yang menunjuk protes terhadap pemimpin tertinggi. Sebaliknya, kerajaan memilih untuk mempercayai analisis yang dibuat oleh mereka sendiri kononnya rakyat masih inginkan mereka berkuasa.

Analisis siapakah yang lebih wajar dipercayai? Analisis yang dibuat oleh rakyat atau analisis yang dibuat oleh mereka sendiri? Siapakah yang lebih memahami suara rakyat, selain dari rakyat sendiri? Suara rakyat boleh didengari dengan mudah di laman-laman web, blog, komen-komen, forum dan lain-lain di dalam internet selain dari di kedai-kedai kopi. Disinilah terletaknya suara pengundi, bukan di bilik mesyuarat cabinet.

Suara siapa yang kerajaan ingin dengar? Suara pengundi yang telah dan akan mengundi atau suara menteri yang telah dan akan diundi keluar?

Hari ini, setelah barisan cabinet baru diumumkan, merupakan hari di mana UMNO telah tidak lagi relevan.

Saya kini tidak lagi menyokong UMNO tetapi tetap memilih Laman Kelab Menyokong UMNO ini sebagai tempat bersuara kerana saya percaya laman ini yang diusahakan oleh rakan-rakan pejuang yang paling saya percayai adalah merupakan laman yang cukup berwibawa dalam menengahkan suara hati rakyat. Pejuang-pejuang di laman ini saya anggap sebagai barisan terakhir (the last frontier) pertahanan UMNO kerana merekalah lambang pejuang tulin yang tidak pernah mengharap atau mendapat apa-apa balasan. Jika para pejuang laman ini juga telah beralih arah...maka disitulah berakhirnya nafas UMNO dan seterusnya Barisan Nasional (mana-mana dahulu).

Jika difikirkan kembali masak-masak, sebenarnya untuk menunaikan kehendak rakyat bukannya susah. Kami bukan meminta projek atau kontrak atau peluang perniagaan atau jawatan atau kerja atau surat sokongan dari para pemimpin UMNO. Permintaan kami hanya satu iaitu agar Perdana Menteri meletakkan jawatannya seberapa segera. Kedegilannya akan menghancurkan Barisan Nasional yang merupakan tunggak kekuatan Malaysia.

UMNO hari ini, bukan lagi UMNO yang saya kenal. Oleh itu, selamat tinggal UMNO.

DATUK SHAHRIR ABDUL SAMAD, 59, is Johor Baru Umno division chairman and also the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, both posts that he has held since 2004.

Shahrir, who has a Masters in Business Administration from IMEDE University, Switzerland, began his political career after he became political secretary to Datuk (now Tun) Musa Hitam, the then Deputy Minister of Trade & Industry & Minister of Primary Industries in 1973.

Shahrir's illustrious career includes several prominent posts such as Deputy Finance Minister, Deputy Minister of Trade & Industry, Federal Territory Minister and even as Welfare Services Minister within a span of seven years (1980 to 1987).

Once seen as a rising star in Umno serving as a Cabinet Minister under Tun Mahathir Mohamad, and at 34, was one of the youngest to be appointed a minister (in June 1983).

The Johor MP for four terms since the 1978 general election resigned as MP in 1988 and forced a by-election when he refused to join Umno Baru.

He stood as an Independent and won the by-election with a majority of 12,613 votes.

Although he did not contest in the 1990 and 1995 elections, he came back to the scene in the 2004 general election and was elected as Johor Baru MP again.

In the last elections, Shahrir retained the Johor Bahru parliamentary seat with a 25,349-vote majority.

He is married to Datin Sharizan Abdullah and has one daughter.

TAN SRI MUHAMMAD MUHAMMAD TAIB, 63, is Umno information chief and former Selangor Mentri Besar, a post he held from 1986 to 1997. Born in Kampung Sungai Manggis, Kuala Kalumpang, Hulu Selangor, is a graduate from Universiti Malaya was also a former teacher in SMK Kuala Kubu Baru.

Muhammad was also former Batang Kali state assemblyman, winning in the general elections of 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1995.

The political veteran joined Umno in 1964, and quickly rose within its ranks to be elected Umno vice president in 2004.

He was also appointed as Selangor Umno deputy state liaison committee chief in the same year and in 2006, he was appointed as a senator.

Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, 54, is MCA secretary-general and also Perak MCA chairman.

He is the older brother of MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting. He has been appointed as Housing and Local Government Minister after Ka Ting declined a Cabinet post.

In the just concluded general election, Ka Chuan was elected as Tanjung Malim MP, winning the seat by a 5,422 majority.

Prior to this achievement, Ka Chuan was Chenderiang state assemblyman for four terms (1986 to 1999).

Born in Kota Tampan New Village, Lenggong, Perak, Ka Chuan joined the MCA in 1978 and actively participated in politics.

Ka Chuan, who has a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Universiti Malaya (UM), worked as a teacher in Keng Chee Chinese Primary School, Pulau Ketam (1977 to 1979) and in Confucius School, Kuala Lumpur from 1982 to 1985.

He is married to Datin Chan Beng Choo and is blessed with two children.

Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen, 61, is Wanita MCA chief and formerly Deputy Finance Minister, a post she held since 2003.

Dr Ng, who is also Pahang Wanita MCA chairman, is now serving her third term as Raub MP since she was elected for the post in the 1999 general election.

She retained her parliamentary seat in the 2008 elections with a 2,752 majority against DAP's Abu Bakar Lebai Sudin of the DAP.

As a teenager, the Kelantan native, who was born in Kampung Kubang Pasu, Kota Baru, had to give tuition to finance her Sixth Form education at the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur.

She then graduated from Universiti Malaya in 1972 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. She was also awarded a Diploma of Reproductive Medicine from the John Hopkins University, USA.

Dr Ng is married to Dr. Chin Chee Sue and has three children, all of which are successful professionals.

Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, 47, is MCA Youth Chief and former Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, a post he has held since 2006 after the Cabinet underwent a revamp.

From 1989 to 1999, he served as press secretary to the then Human Resources Minister Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek and later as his political secretary.

Born in Malacca, Liow officially joined the MCA in 1981 and actively progressed in the party. By 2005, he was appointed as MCA Youth chief.

He is also Bentong MP, and has retained the parliamentary seat since the 1999 general election. He won by a 12, 549 majority in the just concluded 12th general election against PKR's Ponusamy Govindasamy.

A fervent fighter for the Chinese community, Liow, who possesses a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is married to Datin Lee Sun Loo and has three children.

Datuk Ong Tee Keat, 52, is MCA vice president and formerly Deputy Higher Education Minister.

He was appointed to the post after a Cabinet reshuffle in 2006, where prior to that he was Deputy Youth and Sports Minister.

The son of a fishmonger, Ong was an active grassroots MCA member even while at varsity.

Six years after graduating as a mechanical engineer, and while enjoying a lucrative post at an engineering firm, he quit to become political secretary to the then Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Lee Kim Sai in 1986.

A gifted writer, Ong, who has won several literary awards for his works was once a columnist for Chinese daily Sin Chew Jit Poh. His articles ran from 1979 to 1986.

After becoming a full-time politician in 1989, he was elected as Ampang Jaya MP, a seat he held for four terms before contesting and winning the newly created Pandan parliamentary seat in the 2004 general election. He maintained the seat in the just concluded general election.

Ong is married to Datin Chooi Yoke Chun and has three daughters.

Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob, 48, is Bera Umno division chief and also Bera MP.

Born in Temerloh, Pahang, Ismail, who is a practising lawyer contested and won the seat in the 2004.

He joined Umno in 1986 and by 1995, became political secretary to then Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism, Datuk Sabaruddin Chik.

He helmed various posts from 1987 to 2004, including Temerloh Umno Information Chief, Temerloh Umno Youth Chief, Temerloh Umno Division Deputy Chairman and Temerloh Umno Division Chairman.

Ismail is married to Datin Muhaini Zainal Abidin.

Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim, 54, is a prominent lawyer turned politician.

He is the chairman and founding partner of Zaid Ibrahim & Co, and became active in politics after he joined Umno in 2000.

One year later he became Kota Baru Umno division chief, and although he was suspended from the post, in 2003 he became Kelantan Umno deputy liaison chief.

Born in Kota Baru, Kelantan, he was Kota Baru MP since 2004 after he contested for the seat in the general election that year, but was dropped from the list of candidates in the just concluded 12th general election.

He was appointed as a senator yesterday (March 18). He was recently announced as one of the four Malaysians to make it into the Forbes Asia list for generous and interesting philanthropists.

Mohd Zaid is married to Datin Suliana Shamsuddin Alias and is blessed with three children.

Datuk Amirsham Abdul Aziz, 58, is former president and chief executive officer of Maybank.

His credentials have been exemplary since he became the bank's managing director in 1994 – taking over from Tan Sri Ahmad Don, who became Bank Negara governor – and subsequently president and CEO in 2002, having started his career there in 1977.

On March 18, 2008, he was sworn in as senator at Dewan Negara.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi a.k.a PAK LAH unveiled a new smaller Cabinet, dropped senior ministers and brought in 50% new faces yesterday, with 16 of the 32 ministers being newcomers. And in a surprise move, he also did away with parliamentary secretaries.

The Prime Minister, who retained the Finance portfolio, named Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister.
Abdullah told a packed press conference at his office here he had incorporated many changes to his administration to enable the government machinery to implement its responsibilities more effectively.

# Cabinet trimmed to 27 ministries, comprising 32 ministers and 37 deputy ministers.

# Six ministers from previous Cabinet dropped.

# Sabah and Sarawak get more deputy ministers.

# Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen becomes MCA’s first woman minister.

Well that was the tagline DAP wanted to use in the next one in which hopefully Anwar will become PM..

The DAP wants Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the future prime minister, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.
Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, said the DAP was backing Anwar because "he is widely accepted by everyone in the opposition".

"We hope he is allowed to take his rightful place in parliament the soonest possible," he said.

Speaking at the one-day DAP national leadership convention here, Lim urged party leaders and members not to rest on their laurels, but to start working immediately to fulfil the people's needs.

He said the DAP would continue to work with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and other non-governmental organisations.
The DAP, Lim added, would double its membership by recruiting 100,000 new members before the next general election.

He also warned party members not to be complacent.

"Just as Malaysians voted for the DAP in this election, they can just as easily vote the party out, should we fail to deliver."

He reminded members how the DAP had won a record number of state seats in Penang in 1990. But in 1995, the party suffered one of its worst electoral defeats

but they have ran into trouble most recently about the NEP policy backfire in which misappropriations were given about demolishing "it" or the corruption that beholds it from past year's government

well here's a quick snip about the history of malaysia's general election and why this one(PRU 12) is the worst yet!

National Front is the longest serving legitimate party administering Malaysia for more than fifty years starting with the Municipal Elections in 1955 in the town area of Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bharu where UMNO (United Malay National Organization-Malay based party) and MCA (Malayan Chinese Associations-Chinese based party) had agreed on certain terms cooperating with each other to grab seats in the Members Committee formed by the British government as an accord and test whether the Malays can unite with the other main races (Chinese and Hindus) thus paving the way for Malaya independence in 1957.


After the triumph of the 1955 Municipal Elections, then MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress-Indian based party) had agreed to band wagon the alliance of UMNO-MCA thus forming an Alliance party inadvertently close the doors for Dato’ Onn to be the first Malaya Chief Minister with his non-communal party of Independence Malayan Party (IMF). Along the way, the Alliance had achieved great successes in building Malaysia as a great economic powerhouse and filling its independence. The party itself had experienced a lot of ups and downs and internal contradictions such as in 1969, thus transforming it into National Front party and again endured an internal and external crisis such had happened in 1989 (UMNO was declared illegal), Sabah political crisis and the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim in 1999 (just to name a few).

But for all the momentous outlining that National Front had endured and experienced, nothing can be compared with the elections result of the year 2008. For all the bad records of Alliance party or National Front setbacks, 2008 election results is the worst ever results which had been experienced by the National Front and such factors that contributes towards this worst defeat came from an internal factor within UMNO itself and an external factors which were dealt wrongly by the incumbent government thus precipitating a protest vote by all the three main races (Malay, Chinese and Hindus) against the National Front.

Differences between 1969 and 2008 election

If the year 1969 had showed how much the wealth gap between the Malays and the Chinese race had spark the racial violence which was transposed through the race riot of 1969. Plus the divide and rule policy of the British government for more than 200 years which was later inflamed by the uneven treatment by the Japanese government during the three years and eight months of the World War II, this factors had contributed by the uprising of the existing grudges by the two main races of Malaysia. This problem was later dealt with the understanding that the government with the need to reform the racial wealth balances by not extricate the wealth of the Chinese and give it to the Malays, but by creating a larger economic cake and bringing back the sidetrack Malay race after 200 years of isolations by the British government through the implementations of the New Economic Policy. I don’t wish to delve deep the differences of the economic wealth pre-1969 elections as my topic is concentrating on the 2008 election results.

The Worst Election Ever for National Front

2008 is a whole different matter for National Front. None of the factors which contribute towards the defeat of that party in 1969 anymore contributes towards the defeat in 2008. In 2008, the opposition’s party only reaping the benefits of sheer ignorance of the incumbent government in settling issues arises which affecting the Malaysian peoples. Here I underline the reasons and factors which contribute to the worst defeat ever since 1957 in a chronology manner:-

Bad advisers – Prime Minister Abdullah had been getting bad advices from the beginning of his tenure as the fifth Prime Minister. Such advices had lead to numerous bad decisions by the executive power such as:-

The bad formations of the cabinet portfolios in 2004 (after the 11th elections) which sees redundant responsibilities of the government ministries that impedes the executive branch from executing efficient order or task and confused the government apparatus with their mechanism in catering the needs of the Malaysian citizens such cases can be seen in areas concerns:-

1) Ministry of Home Affairs vs Ministry of Internal Security;

2) Ministry of Regional (Kementerian Wilayah Persekutuan) vs Ministry of Rural Areas and Regional (Kementerian Luar Bandar dan Wilayah) vs Local Council vs Ministry of Housing and Local Government (Kementerian Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan);

3) Ministry of National Heritage and Culture vs Ministry of Tourism ;

The cancellations of the Malaysian bidding for Asia’s Games in 2006 which shows that Malaysia unwilling to challenge human ingenuity of making the games succeed on Malaysia’s soil despite having the first class facilities after the success of 1998 Commonwealth games;

The Foreign Office blunder of apologizing to the Chinese government on the video case of allegedly Chinese citizens squatting despite the true identity of the women after detail investigations which shows that it was a Malaysian lady. The failure of PR to explain the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for such accused individual to squat aim to force any foreign object in accused body or in that particular case drugs substance to voluntarily push out from her vagina;

The terminations of PROTON’s CEO (Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff), despite his achievement in accumulating PROTON’s cash savings and with the building of the Tanjung Malim Proton’s City at the costing of 1.3 billion using PROTON’s own funds without borrowing any single cents form the government;

The cancellations of the double railway electric trains projects along the West coast lines (16 trains/ a day) at 160kmph which will see the integrations of rural area into big cities of Johor Bharu - Kuala Lumpur – Ipoh – Penang – Padang Besar and all the cities along the proposed lines;

The selling of the MV Agusta companies at the price of 1 Euro far outweigh its real market price despite buying the coveted high-tech Italian motorcycle company at the 400 million dollars on the intentions of small engine technology transfer to PROTON to built its own small engine consuming less fuel in parallel with the market demand;

The cancellations of the Scenic Bridge on the Johore Causeway after the projects had been undertaken on the views that such structure development had interfered on the sovereignty of Singapore and the cancellations reimbursement which cost higher than building the bridge itself to Gerbang Perdana that was in charge on the project development;

The desertion of Multimedia Super Corridor project and it’s lost of exclusiveness when areas concerns are unable to be determined lucidly and land that was neglect unproductively. The unproductive e-village projects and un-enthusiast investment on such areas even though such potentials is still high where Infosys that was set up in India at the same time amounting to more than 40 billion dollars;

The stagnations of Putrajaya development projects with the cancellations of its monorail intercity projects and slow pace of Putrajaya development itself.

Tun Dr. Mahathir’s character assassinations by the media – After the Prime Minister Abdullah took over the helm from his predecessor; the media’s had launched a character assassinations campaign non-stop by portraying a very bad image of the former Prime Minister. The public especially the Chinese community feel discontented because they revered the former Prime Minister as their saviour in the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the Malays community themselves who remembered Tun Dr. Mahathir as one of the great statesmen Malaysia had offered before feel dissatisfied and disgruntled seeing the unjust treatment of the media towards their national hero.

Tun Dr. Mahathir open critics towards his successor – This factor played a major part when Tun Dr. Mahathir failed to advise Prime Minister Abdullah in his decision making process on certain matters and launched an open critics on how Prime Minister Abdullah decision’s was decided. Seeing such an act by the former Prime Minister, Malaysian especially the Chinese community that was far economic aware feel such critics must at least be heard and understood in an intellectual manner. But again Prime Minister Abdullah failed to understand such critics and advice.

Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar factor - Perhaps one of the major factors which contribute to the worst defeat ever of the National Front party is the ambitious young man named Khairy Jamaluddin. Being cropped up from nowhere, most Malaysian believes this young man is the main factor behind every government decision making process. His relationship with Prime Minister Abdullah as the Abdullah’s son in law and even though denied by Prime Minister Abdullah that this man had influenced him on every government decision making process, but the public perceptions is high that he is the man behind all the bad government decisions.

In politics, where perceptions is much more important than reality, Khairy Jamaluddin perhaps is the most hated man in Malaysia of all time but with his powerful connections and daily image boost through the media put him on the post of UMNO Youth Deputy and he often talks on government policies where the cabinet ministers themselves shunned talking about it. The scandals behind Khairy Jamaluddin is numerous as underline below (just to name a few):-

i. Khairy Jamaluddin was first seen above the rules and regulations or the law by the public when he was officially involved in the politics despite holding professional governmental post in the Prime Minister department which according to the rules he had to let go his governmental post to get involved actively in politics;


ii. ECM-Libra Avenue scandal;

iii. Pantai Holdings sell out to Singapore owned GLC’s;

iv. The cancellations of Scenic Bridge projects;

v. The personal passing hand to hand of Former Deputy Prime Minister passport when Anwar Ibrahim was freed by the Malaysian court;

vi. Much publicised his MyTeam football team which was sponsored by Scomi;

vii. Peoples perceptions on his personal influences and involvement in any government decisions and contracts awards;

viii. Peoples perceptions on his personal involvement in the naming of the 2008 National Fronts UMNO elections candidates;

ix. The usage of UMNO owned media companies to boost Khairy’s own image through daily exposure of his personal activities and views regarding governmental policies and decisions despite no cabinet post portfolio vested when he is only holding the political post of UMNO Youth Deputy;

x. Khairy’s numerous blunder’s remarks against the oppositions leaders such as to PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat challenging him to take back particular views regarding certain matters or law action will taken but at the end nothing happens;

xi. Khairy’s personal racist sentiments remarks against the Chinese community when there is no issues to be raised so that he will be seen as the saviour of the Malay based community;

xii. Khairy’s incorrect remarks on the New Economic Policy whereas such policies had already over in 1990 and was replaced by the New Development Policy and Vision 2020 policy. Such remarks on the New Economic Policy was seen by the public as to only boost his image as the championing of the Malay based community;

xiii. Khairy’s personal involvement in building Putera UMNO brigade consisting members from “Mat Rempits/ Illegal street racers” to be the action arms of UMNO Youth despite bad records from Malaysian Royal Police that such an act will only worsen the illegal racing in Malaysia;

xiv. Royal Malaysian Police staffs perceptions towards Khairy’s personal involvement in the formations of IPCMC (Independent Police Commissions of Conduct) which was seen by the Police as unnecessary check and balance apparatus;

xv. The conduct of Khairy in leading the UMNO members gathering during Condoleezza Rice visits to Malaysia on the issues of Palestinian treatment by the Israelis where such gathering was seen by the public as double standard measures by the local authorities and Malaysian Police in awarding permits and treatment on the rioting of UMNO members;

xvi. Khairy’s purposelessness and un-bearings personal vendetta against the former Prime Minister Mahathir which was seen by the public as a rash act and foolhardy on the comparative basis that this young man without any achievement went against an old and revered statesman.

Unclear answers on certain issues by the particular Cabinet Ministers of Prime Minister Abdullah on the issues of Approved Permits (AP’s);


Immature remarks by some Cabinet Ministers of many issues answered in a childish manner on public media such as by Minister Nazri Aziz, Minister Zainuddin Maidin and Deputy Minister Shaziman;

Unclear scandal and grudges arises between the Minister of Internal Security and the Malaysian Inspector General of Police on the issues of the release of convicts by the Minister himself whereas the bloggers who revealed such scandal haven’t been found yet and no progress report on the investigations case;

Unwise handling of the HINDRAF issues by the security analyst which failed to advise Prime Minister Abdullah to act fast on the dire allegations made by the HINDRAF members which escalate the situations thus bent the support of the Hindus vote for the National Front completely during the 2008 elections;


Complete utilization of the media as a propaganda tools for National Front in putting Prime Minister Abdullah and boosting his personal image more than it should had inculcate a reverse psychology message to the Malaysian that they fed up with such cheap publicity.

People’s message

The peoples of Malaysia had cast a very clear message to Prime Minister Abdullah to act in a rightful manner. Whether Prime Minister Abdullah will do the right thing to rectify back on what National Front had gone wrong, only he and himself have the answer. The longer he delayed on the right decision, UMNO and National Front will pay the price of such ignorance.

Clearly one factors doesn’t chip in to the National Front worst defeat in 2008 elections. But with the build up of wrong decisions after another, and the appointment of wrong advisers who advice Prime Minister on what he wants to hear, National Front had to endure its worst embarrassment. For the performance and factors which contributes to the worst defeat of the National Front, I have underline clearly as above details. For that I rest my case.

Mungkinkah kita tidak perasan bahawa..
Dimalam kemelut yang sedang melanda didalam politik tanah air, kita diserang oleh rasa gundah melihat sistem pentadbiran negara yang tunggang langgang tanpa hala tuju yang nyata untuk membangunkan satu negara dan bangsa dimata dunia. Keadaan ini telah menyebabkan hilangnya rasa kepercayaan akar umbi terhadap kepimpinan negara.

Justeru itu rakyat telah menyatakan rasa tidak puas hati dengan membuat bantahan mereka melalui peti undi pada pilihanraya 2008 baru baru ini. Akibatnya kita telah kehilangan sokongan 2/3 dan hanya mendapat majoriti sebanyak 148 kerusi sahaja.

Desakan telah dibuat oleh rakyat disusuli pula dengan desakan saorang wira umno tulen yang tidak memikirkan kepentingan diri iaitu Dato Mukhriz Tun, Dr Mahathir dengan menghantar surat rayuan kepada Perdana Menteri bagi menyatakan hasrat supaya pucuk pimpinan tertinggi melepaskan jawatan agar kepercayaan rakyat bertaut kembali. Dalam hal ini kita tidak boleh mengharapkan Dato Mukhriz berjuang kesaorangan dan disarankan kepada semua Ahli KMU berganding bahu bersama beliau untuk menyelamatkan negara dari jatuh ketangan pembangkang jika resolusi mendesak Abdullah Badawi meletakkan jawatan tidak mencapai matlamat.

Saya yakin pada pilihanraya akan datang ( PRU13) rakyat tanpa rasa kasih dan cinta lagi pada parti akan bertindak lebih drastik lagi dengan kuasa undi yang ada pada mereka. Kebencian ini harus di sekat dengan cara yang terbaik iaitu Abdullah Badawi MESTI melepaskan Jawatan sebagai Perdana Menteri dan juga Presiden UMNO tanpa sebarang syarat.

Saya merayu kepada SEMUA VETERAN UMNO TAMPIL menyatakan pendapat serta sokongan desakan daripada akar umbi agar dapat menyelamatkan Negara ini terus di tunggang langgang oleh kerajaan anak beranak ini.

The Raja Perlis has gone against the wishes of the Prime Minister by consenting to the appointment of Bintong assemblyman Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the new Menteri Besar of Perlis, in place of embattled Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who had Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's mandate to continue as MB. Political observers say the difficult situation could lead to a constitutional crisis.


The confidential secretary to the Raja Perlis, Mohd Adib Zakaria who distributed the statement to that effect to reporters in front of Istana Siraj, said the appointment was made under Article 39 (2) of the Laws of the Constitution of Perlis.

Under this provision, the ruler shall appoint a person who he thinks has the confidence of the majority of the members of the state assembly to become the Menteri besar to head the state government.

“Based on this provision and after being satisfied with his ability to garner the support of the majority of the state assemblymen, His Royal Highness has consented to appoint Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the Menteri Besar of Perlis effective March 14 2008,” he said.

Dr Md Isa was a Perlis state executive councillor until 2004 when he was not re-nominated to contest in the general election that year. He was nominated to contest in Bintong in the general election last Saturday and won the seat by defeating PAS’ Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir with a majority of 2,110 votes. He polled 4,882 votes against Mohd Anuar’s 2,772.

The Ruler's move totally floored Shahidan, more so after the effort he made to secure the MB's appointment from Abdullah.

While he was resigned to the fact that he had to accept the Raja Perlis' ruling, he made an open rebuke to Dr Md Isa, whom he warned that by accepting the MB's post, the latter went against the Umno president and the party's wishes. He also blamed bitter rivals Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid for engineering the coup.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s coy play earlier this week seeking the Prime Minister to “do the right thing” has bloomed into what the phrase really meant: a letter circulated among Umno members and played up by the blogs has Mukhriz categorically pleading to Abdullah to resign and take responsibility for BN’s dismal performance for the sake of Umno's survival. Later in the evening, Abdullah told Bernama that he will leave it to Umno Youth to take action against Mukhriz, the movement's Exco member. In Putrajaya, Umno vice-presidents Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam worry that Mukhriz’s action would only further divide the party. Puteri Umno lodged a police report over posters strung up in the city that called for the PM’s resignation. Its chief Datuk Noraini Ahmad regretted that irresponsible elements were trying to link Puteri Umno to the deed.

GEORGE TOWN: About 1,000 Umno members demonstrated in Komtar where the Chief Minister’s office is located at 2.15pm, immediately after Friday prayers. The demonstrators shouted slogans, from urging the Lim Guan Eng administration not to scrap the NEP to pledging support for Datuk Seri Ahmad Badawi’s administration, led by Umno Bukit Mertajam division chief Datuk Musa Shaikh Fadzir. The peaceful assembly later dispersed after the police gave the order.

IPOH: The fiasco in Perak where the DAP-PKR-Pas triumvirate has not even kick-started their administration continues as haggling on State Exco seat allocation, with DAP demanding a lion’s share after reluctantly agreeing to Pas’ Nizar Jamaluddin, has dismayed the Ruler. However, the impasse is set to be broken after 31 assemblymen from the three parties collectively signed a letter agreeing to cooperate in forming a coalition state government and also agreeing to Nizar as Mentri Besar. The letter was handed over to the Sultan of Perak's confidential secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Mohamad Nor at 10 pm last night. PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said with an understanding reached, the three parties should now focus on administering the state with honesty and sensitivity to people’s problems and needs. Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali also welcomed the consensus.

GEORGE TOWN: Following the Umno-led attacks against the fledgling Lim Guan Eng administration, Lim met Malay NGOs, assuring them that the DAP-led administration will never scrapped the NEP, only the abuses that has led to cronyism and corruption. Former CM Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon echoed Lim’s aghast against the Penang Umno’s call that the Federal Government scrap mega projects in the state on grounds voters rejected the BN government.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno is still undecided as to who should become Mentri Besar after Datuk Idris Jusoh seemed unable to garner support to continue with his stewardship. It would seem that several Umno assemblymen not in favour of Idris have muster enough influence on the palace to withhold consent. The Sultan of Terengganu, who is also the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is expected to be back on Saturday to make a decision.

SHAH ALAM: Newly-minted Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim is going to get a briefing from state auditors on the changes and movement of assets that he intends to implement. The former Guthrie CEO hopes to stop speculation on why documents may have been destroyed at the secretariat. “We want to be professional about it and aware before we take next steps,” he said. Selangor State Secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud appeared to have alleviated the allegation that former MB Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo inked a deal after dissolution with Puncak Niaga to operate and maintain a water treatment plant. Ramli claimed that it was he who signed the deal, witnessed by his deputy.

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Pas and Umno leaders held secret meetings here immediately after the BN Selangor Government fell to the opposition but Pas assemblymen insisted that they never had any intention of deserting the coalition. MP for Shah Alam Khalid Abd Samad said Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Mohd Hassan Mohd Ali attended a meeting with Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo to pre-empt any attempt by Umno to used foul means to nullify the election.

Manuoharan, under detention at the Kamunting Detention Camp for his involvement in the Hindu Rights Action Force, won the Kota Alam Shah seat with a 7,184-vote majority. Khalid said the Opposition will call for the repeal of the ISA in Parliament.

PETALING JAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin says that being the Prime Minister’s son-in-law has provided him “protection” which he wants to use to change things for the better.

The Umno Youth deputy chief said he was able to “push the envelope now” partly because of that relationship with the prime minister.

“There’s a certain extent (to which) these people in Umno will not go after me. So it gives me ‘protection’ to change things.

“If I don’t use this ‘protection’ to change things for the better, then I’m just wasting time and marking my time to go up the ladder of politics. That’s not what I am about.

Well, we've been seeing dumb politicians spew crap out of their mouths without using their brains (if any) a lot lately haven't we. It's really hard to believe that he graduated from Oxford and has written articles for magazines before. I don't know whether he knows that he had just openly admit that he will take advantage of his position as the PM's son-in-law.

According to the article, he wants to use this 'privilege' to create 'change'. Any change coming from someone who supports mat rempits (he calls them 'mat cemerlang's) and is OBVIOUSLY racist to the core (he was the one who incited the fear among the Malays that the Chinese is going to take advantage of them) is definitely NOT welcomed. I can only imagine what kind of change he will bring about. Oh and Khairy, if you're reading this, YES WE'LL REMEMBER WHAT YOU DID... FOREVER!

Btw, he called me a monkey. If fact, if you're a blogger, he called u a monkey too. Haha... I bet he's just jealous we know HTML and he doesn't.

PKR, DAP an PAS have successfully averted an impasse after party leaders reached an amicable decision to reallocate the composition of the Perak state executive council posts last night.

PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali confirmed that the new composition will be six DAP, three PKR and one PAS to form the 10-person Perak state executive council.

Yesterday, PKR threatened to pull out from the Perak state administration upon hearing that eight posts will go to DAP.

"In the spirit of sincere openness, we stress that the composition of the exco must reflect the composition of the population of Perak and represent the interests of all ethnic groups fairly," said Syed Husin in a statement yesterday.

However, he said PKR will honour its agreement to support the coalition government with its representatives being part of the governing coalition in the state assembly without taking up any exco posts.

Syed Husin pointed out that the compromise was reached after both Perak and central leaders concluded their discussions last night.

"(PKR de facto leader) Anwar Ibrahim, (DAP veteran) Lim Kit Siang and PAS secretary-general Kamaruddin Jaafar were in communication with each other to resolve the issue," he said.

Two deputy MBs

Syed Husin also said that a second deputy MB post will be allocated to PKR. It is expected that Perak will follow Penang's example of naming two deputy MBs.

On Wednesday, it was decided between the parties that DAP chairperson and Setiawan state assemblyperson Ngeh Khoo Ham would be made deputy menteri besar (1) while an Indian candidate would be made deputy menteri besar (2).

From the list of Perak states assemblyperson, the only Indian candidate from PKR would be S Kesavan who won the Hutan Melintang state seat.

Kesavan - who is PKR youth deputy secretary - had defeated MIC women’s deputy chief S Thangasvari by 1,721 votes.

Syed Husin also said the new state government will appoint a PKR representative to be one of its two senators.

However, Syed Husin stressed the finalised names will be announced after PAS’ Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is sworn in as the new MB at the Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar.

Contentious issue

The forming of the Perak state government has been a contentious issue since the general election ended last weekend.

It began with the DAP leadership. Party stalwart Lim Kit Siang saying that the party had only agreed for a DAP or PKR menteri besar and objected Nizar’s appointment.

Lim later apologised over his objection after DAP was promised eight seats in the Perak state exco. Soon after PKR disagreed on the composition and declined to be part of the exco.

Drama ensured when the swearing-in ceremony for Nizar was called off due to some uncertainties as to whether the three parties will be able to work together to form a coalition, and a stable government, according to the royal palace.

The Regent of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah subsequently ordered all 31 state assemblypersons from the three parties to sign a letter in support of the regent's decision to appoint Nizar.

It has been learnt that all the signatures were submitted last night to Perak Sultan Azlan Shah’s secretary at 10pm.

I found something that will deny Khairy's and Anwar's hope of getting PM of Malaysia even though it's impossible with Pak Lah in charge.This surely will boost najib's hope of getting it instead.Nothing weird here

Malaysian Voters lastly are no longer afraid to support the opposition of Barisan Alternative of Malaysia

THERE was no grandstanding on tanks; no sea of banner-waving protesters in monochrome T-shirts; not even a change in the federal government. Yet Malaysia underwent a quiet revolution on March 8th. The political scene transformed itself overnight. That the change happened at the ballot box and not in the street makes it all the more cheering.

For 50 years since independence, Malaysia has been ruled by a coalition dominated by the United Malays National Organisation, or UMNO. Malaysia has prospered wonderfully, and the arrangement seemed immutable. Not any more. The governing coalition, the National Front, won the election for the federal parliament and eight of the 13 state assemblies easily enough (see article). But in a huge swing it lost the two-thirds majority in Parliament that it has enjoyed for 40 years, and which enabled it to change the constitution at will. In peninsular Malaysia (ie, excluding Malaysian Borneo), it actually—if narrowly—lost the popular vote. In five states, including the most populous, the opposition will form the government.

This is extremely good news for many reasons. The most basic is that democracies need a vibrant and credible opposition. Any party that stays in power for half a century is liable to show signs of complacency, arrogance and corruption, and UMNO is no exception. Abdullah Badawi won by a landslide in 2004, partly because of a promise to clean things up. Voters have turned against him not least because he is seen as having failed, or—worse—as not having even tried hard.

Second, the election result is a victory for hope over fear. At times the government has used harsh laws against opponents. Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of what is now the largest opposition party, and Lim Guan Eng, the new chief minister of the state of Penang, have done time in jail. More generally, the National Front has played on the fears evoked by the ghosts of 1969, when opposition advances at the polls were followed by bloody race riots. A vote for the opposition, went the none-too-subtle message, would risk bloodshed as the Malay majority took its revenge on the minorities. Yet it was not only many ethnic-Chinese voters (about a quarter of the population) and, especially, disgruntled ethnic Indians (about 8%) who deserted the National Front. Many Malays switched too.

That is a third reason for optimism: communal tension may not be the tinderbox that Malaysia has for so long assumed it to be. If so, the result may herald new thinking about the institutionalised racism of the pro-Malay affirmative-action policies introduced after 1969. The opposition parties campaigned on a platform of “colour-blind” affirmative action—help for those who need it, not for a particular ethnic group. In the past, that would have been deemed electoral suicide. Surely Malays would not vote against their own economic self-interest? In the event many seem to have recognised that the policy has become less a means for redistributing wealth to the disadvantaged than a vehicle for corruption and cronyism.

Of course, the opposition still has a long way to go. It is a loose coalition of ill-matched parties: a left-of-centre, mainly ethnic-Chinese one; an Islamist party that in the one state it has ruled since 1990 has banned unisex barbers and introduced single-sex tills in supermarkets; and Mr Anwar's multi-ethnic liberal reformers. They may make a mess of governing the states they have won, or prove as venal as those they have replaced. They have co-operated well in opposition: the Islamist party has moderated its demands, so as not to scare off the Chinese and Indian supporters of the other parties, and they made good tactical choices about who should contest which seat. But by the time of the next election, they will need to win votes as a potential government, rather than as a symbol of protest.

Or perhaps by then UMNO and the National Front will have reformed themselves. The first signs were good. Mr Badawi accepted the setback with grace. Opposition leaders avoided gloating and told their supporters not to celebrate in the streets lest they provide an excuse for troublemakers. Such maturity and restraint may not last. But in a region where competitive politics are so often feared because they are associated with instability, they offer a beacon of hope.
